Introverted college junior Scarlett Goodwin struggles with social anxiety. A mathematics major, she focuses on her classes and her job in the tutoring lab until she’s coerced into tutoring Southern University’s soccer star, Tucker Price. Tucker’s bad boy, womanizer reputation makes Scarlett wary of any contact, let alone spending several hours a week in close proximity.

But from her first encounter, she realizes Tucker isn’t the person everyone else sees. He carries a mountain of secrets which she suspects hold the reason to his self-destructive behavior. But the deeper she delves into the cause of his pain, the deeper she gets sucked into his chaos. Will Scarlett find the happiness she’s looking for, or will she be caught in Tucker’s aftermath?

After Math takes typical new adult archetypes and gives a fresh take to it. I enjoyed that these characters are both damaged and saving each other, rather than showing one character to be the sole savior. I appreciated reading about a character with social anxiety who couldn’t afford medicine. She really works hard on her mental health, and that really made me want to root for her! The conversation relating to not having money often felt insincere. At one point specific qualifiers were used to distinguish between “upper middle”, “lower middle”, that felt distinctively misplaced. That language is for economists and sociologists, but for people with a lived experience of having not have their own words for “poor”, “rich”, and “rich rich”. Though I overall enjoyed it, I did notice some obvious “show don’t tell” moments as well as some incredibly unrealistic experiences with the characters (one practically mind reads the other the whole way through) that diminish the quality of the work as a whole for me. BUT it was still overall enjoyable.

Before reading this book I can honestly say I felt uninspired about reading and just down in the dumps in my own life. A good friend suggested this book because it is one of her personal favorites and I decided I needed to try something to get out of my funk- and this book I can honestly say has reinspired me! I feel hopeful about love, laughing and just being in the moment! This is the type of book I would love to see as a movie! I can’t wait to read similar books!

A very cute love story. This was a fun read. I loved Scarlett and her issues - her anxiety struggles were very real. Also, Tucker was very believable too – he had some issues that I think a lot of “professional” athletes experience. Reading this took me back to my college days and I enjoyed the escape.

Great book, but the ending is kind of anticlimactic

How often does the popular guy go for the academic type? Never. But they share the same pain. It was an AMAZING read. Not like a lot of the other romance books. Wasn't focused on just sex it had depth giving you an instant connection. When her heart ached so did mine. Read this today, in a few hours Can't wait to read the next one right now.

I can honestly say I fell in love with the characters and the storyline itself. I have had some books on my iBooks app and just didn't give it much thought until today and I can say this is the first book I read on iBooks and I am very glad I did! I can't wait for more.
  • Hooked!

From the beginning this story had me hooked. I just love Scarlett and Tucker! I was rooting for them to be together especially after I found out a little bit about Tucker's upbringing. Made my heart ache for him. Denise has a way of making her readers fall in love with her characters! Cannot wait to see little updates here and there of these two in the other books! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend reading it. :)
